Hi there:
I’ve got a 97 Toyota Camry LE, 4 cyl with a couple of nagging
problems. After about 6K miles (and cooler fall weather) it started
making a whining noise when the engine was cold. I think it’s
pretty loud after all the hype on the Camry being so quiet. Also, this
car fogs up in a heart-beat. I’ve noticed that the AC doesn’t drip
water very much or at all. I think it’s retaining (rententive!) AC
condensation water, which creates a lot of humity when I turn on the
heater. The local dealer has not been sympathetic or understanding
of my concerns. They actually told me I should run the AC year round to
keep the windows from fogging and adjust the thermostat as needed!
On the 3rd visit I got a mechanic to acknowledge that it was making the
noise and then they came back and said that all the Camrys made this
noise! Well it didn’t make that noise when I bought the car and now I’m
beginning to feel sorry I did. Anyway if you have had a similar
experience, I would appreciate any advise or co-miseration you would
care to share.
Thanks, Tom

Yes, I notice the same thing in the morning. If it’s normal, just accept it as
a characteristic of the car. It only whines for a short while…about the time
it takes to get out of the parking lot. I find the buzzing door panels
annoying, but am not about to take it to the dealer for adjustment. They’ll
probably just make it worse.
There are others on the board who complain about the drivers seat movement that
you might feel. Nothing you have described warrant dealer attention. My
windows fog up just like yours do. This doesn’t annoy me nearly as much as the
infrequent buzz I hear from the passenger door panel. We all have those things
that rub us the wrong way.
Enjoy,
DD
My ’97 Camry V6 XLE makes a whining noise. My dealer claimed that it
was caused by a belt tension spring. I don’t know if that is the same
noise. My car makes that sound year round.

98 camry XLE…with trac and everything…cept fog lights =/ Now I feel
better about the buzzing doors, I’m going to have it adjusted and
I think the roof too…. I would have yours adjusted too if I were
you…its free, so what’s the prob, if they car was perfect they wouldn’t of
made a warantee. I also had a problem simular to yours, I have a loud strut
noice on the right side, took it to the dealer he ordered them, and them
pissed me off……….I don’t blame toyota cuz I called them and they were
very helpful with the situation, and they dealer called to make an
appointment, but they lied on us, and now I don’t want them working on the
car, I took it to another dealer and they said its normal strut noise, so I
don’t know what to do now, but to go out of the state =?….but I would
definately get all your probs adjusted while its under warentee, and before
it gets worse.

My 93 Camry makes that same whining noise when it first starts and I have
heard the same noise from many other Camrys. I have always thought it
was the alternator making the noise, but since it goes away and doesn’t
seem to hurt anything I can live with it. There are way too many good
things about the Camry than to complain about a few minor faults.
Maybe Rick Jones could clarify exactly what causes the whine.

Also have a 97 Camry LE but it’s a V6 with 9K miles.
So far no whining noise when the engine is cold but
then it never sees temps below 45 deg.
here in Phoenix, AZ.
