I have a 1987 Avolon with 16000 miles on it. It has this annoying
condition at 40-45 mph— that if you let off the accelerator during a
slight pull it will make a thumping noise as the trans downshifts out
off overdrive.
Has anyone had this problem?

Yep, I notice mine doing that occasionally, usually with feathering the
throttle then letting off slightly, then a little gas again. It’s been talked
about here some.
