Yes, you need to do something.
But I recomend with these moter’s is to simply buy a used engine of
the same year normally.
I have seen time and time again, people trying to rebuild, do it
half way or whatever, spending allot of time and money just to be
displeased with the end result, and tragicly, often time’s doing the work
over again until putting in a different engine after all is said and done.
I personally just put in a different engine, and I recomend that
with a bottom end problem, but then again, if you just need a head, well
then you are looking at Gasket cost’s, belt, and other stuff you will do.
I can see an easy $200 bill atleast. Possibly this may work for you, The
used head I mean.
Anyway, putting a moter in has alway’s paid off for me. If you are
in the pdx area, I have bought 4AC moter’s used for $175 Complete. Whole
late model wrecked Cars for $200.
So, hope this does’nt further confuse your choice, but, if I could
find the moter cheap, I would go that rout.

Has anyone out there rebuilt a 1988 1.5 Liter 4cyl (3 valve) 3E engine?
My winter beater 88 tercel (130,000 mi) is running on 3 cylinders, only
15lbs
compression on cylinder 4, the rest are ok, above 135 lbs.
Forcing compressed air thru the spark plug hole with #4 cyl at the top
dead center ignition point reveals a leaky exhaust valve.
I’d like to get another 20,000 mi out of it so I’m planning on doing a
cheap rebuild
by replacing the head with a used ($100) one, and maybe slap in new
rings.
Does this engine tear down easily or will all the studs break etc… ?
Does the oil pan come off easily.. (replacing rings)
How durable is this engine, ie bottom end crank and rod bearings
Did you replace the head bolts with new ones?
Any good mail order sources or web pages?
thanks
