Hello, I am an 18 year old college student and I really need some help. I am interested
in becoming an automobile designer, but I do not know how to go about this. I would
appreciate any insight as to what type of classes I should take and/or how to break into
the industry. Any other comments are welcome. I would really appreciate if someone could
help me.

Special field called Transportation design or something like that. Offered
in three colleges, one in Pasadena, one in Detroit, and one in Cleveland I
believe.
If you want to design autos, those are the only colleges to go to cause
that is where all the manufacturer’s go. Sorry I do not remember names.
And it is a very hard field to get hired in. ONly about 100 a year or
soemthing like that get hired, the rest tend to go into advertising.
I know this cause I once had the same dream (but I refused to change
schools, but even the head of the major I went into, Industrial Design,
said I was in the total wrong school for it).

The one in Detroit is called the Center for Creative Studies (CCS), I
believe.

Tiger,Anything you want to do, you just go for it and do not let anyone sway you into
anything different. If you want to be a good Automobile designer then start working on cars
and trucks now. There is a lot you can learn from this. Study Mechanical Engineering. As far
as being a designer that actually draws car designs, you may find that working as a engineer
allows you this freedom. Any way you consider it you will be working in a team environment
and will have to consider input from those around you, above and below. Engineers design
things sometimes, sometimes the designer is a draftsman with a lot of experience. The worst
thing to be is a designer that designs things he or she has never had to sweat over. If you
start working on cars you will find poor ideas that would be easily improved upon. You will
also find things that you will marvel over. To pursue Mechanical engineering is realistic.
You can go anywhere you want if you put your mind up to it.
