What?! Toyota Thinks It Can Join The Turbo Game This Late

Share on Facebook Share on Twitter Finally the Camry is a bit more exciting. We should probably start calling this the turbocharging age in the auto industry. Everything from pickup trucks to supercars have received a smaller displacement engine with a turbo strapped on. Toyota isn’t a rookie when it comes to forced injection as we saw from the wildly successful Supra. Since Toyota is more of a reliable family car company and not a sporty one, we haven’t seen much use of a performance turbo since the Supra. Surprisingly however, Toyota’s ultra-popular Camry is about to get one.

The Camry’s top engine is currently a 3.5 liter V6 producing 268 horsepower and 248 lb-ft of torque. These are decent numbers, but it doesn’t excel in fuel efficiency with 21 mpg city. Apparently a turbo four-cylinder will replace the V6 to up the mpg. Lexus, Toyota’s premium brand, already has a few turbo-fours, so we expect to see something similar to those. The NX 200t engine produces 241 horsepower and 258 lb-ft of torque—a very worthy replacement to the 3.5-liter V6. Whether the Camry gets a similar engine as the Lexus or not, we think a punchy turbo would make this boring sedan a whole lot more fun.
