The Volkswagen Group has surpassed Toyota Motor Co. in deliveries over the first half of 2015.
Through June, Toyota moved 5.02 million units while VW managed to sell 5.04 million. These delivery numbers are actually down compared to last year, with Toyota falling by 1.5 percent and VW down 0.5 percent.
This puts VW on track to capture the title of world’s largest automaker, three years ahead of the brand’s schedule. General Motors sits in the third spot, delivering 4.86 million vehicles last year, a drop of 1.2 percent year-over-year.
Volkswagen saw strong growth in Europe which helped to offset the slumping Chinese market, where the German brand’s sales fell by 3.9 percent. Toyota actually managed to grow in China despite the market trending downwards, jumping by 10 percent year-over-year in that market.
