[Video] Toyota has a parking sonar that enhances safety image
Certain models in the Toyota lineup can be equipped with the Intelligent Clearance Sonar (ICS) technology, which according to the company can reduce the occurrence of accidents.
More to the point, according to a survey the accidents taking place during parking and involving models fitted with the ICS system have seen a 70% reduction during pedal misapplication incidents, as well as a 40% reduction during reversing incidents at home in Japan. The survey took place for a period of 18 months in between January 2015 and June this year in Japan, sifting through around 2,500 accidents from insurance companies that cover approximately 63,000 Alphard, Vellfire and Prius models.
There was no clear difference when discussing accidents with forward-moving vehicles, 26,000 ICS-equipped models (out of the 63,000) did better jobs when regarding incidents involving both pedal misapplications and the driver missing an obstacle in reverse. The ICS system uses a clearance sonar to detect obstacles when a sudden start is detected – such as the case with pedal misapplication (which is more common than we want to admit). The Alphard, Vellfire and Prius are all 2015 models and they feature additional sensors to enhance the system’s detection range. The ICS also helps reduce collision damage or avoids altogether when involving accidents with adjacent vehicles and obstacles.
