There are quite a few reasons now for consumers to opt for cars with automatic transmissions and the main reason is ease of driving. Considering how traffic on roads has sky rocketed, the preference for cars with manual transmissions has significantly taken a hit. Riding on this trend are car manufacturers and they are giving the consumers what is demanded. There are already quite a few cars in the market with automatic transmission. We bring you four cars that will be launched this year which will come with an auto-box and there’s everything from a sub-compact sedan to an SUV on offer.
The Ameo made its global debut in India in February this year and is the first German car that has been specifically designed for the Indian car market and is likely to have the highest percentage of localization compared to any other Volkswagen cars sold in India. While the car is expected to go on sale in India in the second half this year, we’ve got to know that there will be a DSG auto-box on offer. The Volkswagen Ameo is based on the carmaker’s popular hatchback Polo and shares some of its key design and style cues. Both the Polo and the Vento come with DSGs so it wasn’t a big surprise that the Ameo will get one too. The diesel variant of the Ameo will come with a 7-speed automatic gearbox and this will help it compete against two cars that come with an Automated Manual Transmission – the Tata Zest and the Maruti Suzuki Swift DZire.

Tata Motors has already showcased the production-spec version of the Hexa SUV at the 2016 Delhi Auto Expo and we’ve told you that the car will be launched in June this year. The new crossover also looks more muscular thanks to the bold front fascia featuring a wide grille, sweptback headlamps, flatter hood and large bumper, whereas the rear features LED tail lamps that lend a premium effect. The cabin is equally impressive and also one of the most premium to be seen on a Tata product featuring a touchscreen infotainment system, auto climate control as well as a Terrain Management System similar to the one seen on Land Rover SUVs. But what Tata also brings to the table is a 6-speed automatic gearbox and this will be a first for Tatas as they haven’t introduced this gearbox in either the Safari Storme or the Aria. The auto-box will be mated to the 2.2-litre four-cylinder VARICOR diesel motor from the Safari Storme VARICOR 400 will do duty here as well, tuned to produce 154bhp and develop 400Nm of torque.

Crafted on the “Active Solid Motion” design philosophy, the new Honda BR-V is conceived on the versatile Brio platform which also underpins models such as Mobilio and Amaze. Honda will venture into the thriving compact SUV segment with BR-V. The SUV will have enough space for 7 people and will be equipped with a 1.5-litre SOHC, 4-cylinder, 16-valve i-VTEC engine that delivers maximum power of 117bhp and a peak torque of 146Nm.
The SUV will also feature a 1.5-litre i-DTEC diesel unit that powers the City and Mobilio, producing 99bhp of power and 200Nm of torque. Mated to the engine will be a Continuously Variable Transmission which we’ve seen on the City and even on the recent Amaze. We can’t wait to see how well Honda has managed to calibrate the engine with the transmission, but the offering will clearly stir up things in the segment.

Toyota Innova Crysta
This has been a much awaited car from the Toyota stable and our curiosity was aroused when the company showcased the car at the 2016 Delhi Auto Expo. The Toyota Innova Crysta retains the old model’s silhouette, it gets a handful of design changes including a new hexagonal grille with two thick chrome slats, sweptback head-lamps, LED daytime running lights. According to the people at Toyota, the car has emerged to a level where it will become a premier offering in the segment. The segment leader now faces stiff competition from a number of cars and what will set it apart is the design, features and the automatic transmission.
Toyota will offer features like automatic climate control, power windows, steering-mounted controls, touchscreen infotainment system with navigation, Bluetooth connectivity, and USB & AUX-IN albeit on select variants. The MPV will come with a choice of 2 engine options, namely, a 2.4-litre GD four-cylinder unit with VNT Intercooler, and a 2.0-litre four-cylinder engine with Dual VVT-i. There will also be a 6-speed automatic gearbox on offer which will probably come at a premium price. However, the auto-box also means that Toyota will be broadening the horizon for more customers to drive the car than be driven.
