Toyota Vios, the long awaited sedan that the Japanese carmaker has been promising to launch in India, was recently imported for research and development. Talks about launching the car in India has been around for nearly two years now and there have been there have been several instances when the car was spotted testing in the county. Globally the car competes against the likes of Honda City, Hyundai Verna, and Volkswagen Vento, and the rivalry will continue in India as well, that is once Toyota decides to launch the car.
In some of our earlier reports, we have mentioned that Toyota might eventually pull the plug on the Etios brand and continue with the bigger and more premium Vios in future. If you ask us that wouldn’t be a bad idea considering the Etios hasn’t been able to attract car buyers in India because of its extensive presence the fleet cars space. That said, these reports are yet to be official confirmed by Toyota India.
Coming to the car itself, the upcoming Toyota Vios sits between the Etios and the Corolla Altis. In terms of dimensions, the car measures 4,410 mm in length, 1,700 mm in width, and 1,475 mm in height. The car has a wheelbase of 2,550 mm, which is identical to the Etios sedan and it weighs 1,075 kilos. In terms of looks, as mentioned before, the car is like a more premium version of the Etios with styling cues borrowed from the Corolla. The new generation Vios even takes some styling it from the new Camry, some of which are visible from the car’s exterior profile.
Internationally the car is powered by a 1.5-litre petrol engine and a 1.4-litre diesel motor. The engines come mated to a 5-speed manual transmission along with the option of a 4-speed automatic gearbox. Safety features will include ABS and dual front airbags as standard.
