Toyota USA Gives LandCruiser The SEMA Treatment

Where most manufacturers tend to exaggerate a vehicle’s strengths when generating a SEMA concept, Toyota has done the exact opposite, taking the legendary off-roadable LandCruiser and stripping it of its rock-hopping ability.

Instead the Toyota Land Speed Cruiser ditches its standard US-market 5.7 litre V8 (the same as you’ll find in Lexus LX 570 in Australia) and opts for a beefed up version, enhanced with a pair of Garrett turbochargers to boost power from 284kW to a more prodigious 1490kW.

“From the outside, the Land Speed Cruiser appears quite normal, quite subtle,” said Toyota’s motorsports technical center manager Chuck Wade, completely ignoring the fact that the Land Speed Cruiser sits on massive low-profile tyres, with ground-scraping ride height.

The power upgrade has also left the modified LandCruiser with a top speed potential of 354 km/h, with Toyota swapping out the regular eight-speed automatic for a racing transmission from drag racing specialists ATI Racing.

A heavily modified frame has allowed the Land Speed Cruiser to sit so close to the ground, with the engine moved up compared to a conventional LandCruiser, but the bodywork moved down over the chassis rails.

The standard front and rear track has also been reduced by around 7.6cm to allow for the fitment of wider tyres, with massive 315/35 ZR20 Michelin Pilot Super Sport tyres wrapped around 20-inch HRE rims.

A subtly redesigned front bumper, with small aero additions to the lower lip, side sills, rear diffuser and rear spoiler helping keep the whole package facing the right way when all 1490kW are unleashed, with the rear view mirrors shaved to give the brick-like Cruiser an aerodynamic advantage.

But this SEMA concept is more than just a show piece, with the Land Speed Cruiser set to challenge the SUV speed record, with testing already underway at Toyota’s Arizona proving ground ahead of the world record attempt.
