Toyota recalls 482K hybrids to replace side curtain airbags
Toyota has launched a repair campaign for side-curtain airbags used in the 2010-2012 Prius and 2011-2012 Lexus CT 200h.
The hybrids use an curtain inflator design with two chambers welded together. The company warns that some cars can develop a crack in the weld, allowing the pieces to separate.
“If an inflator separates, the CSA could partially inflate, and, in limited circumstances, one or both sections of the inflator could enter the interior of the vehicle,” the company warns. “If an occupant is present in the vehicle, there is an increased risk of injury.”
The behavior has been observed “when the vehicle is parked an unoccupied for a period of time.” It is unclear if the defect has been associated with any accidents or injuries.
The campaign affects more than a million vehicles globally, including approximately 482,000 sold in the US market.
