Toyota Australia has announced full details of its updated LandCruiser Prado range. The re-engined model promises more power, torque, refinement and equipment, at a modest increase in price.
The 4.0 litre petrol V6 carries over with minor improvments to power, torque and emissions, but the headline news is the addition of the all-new 1GD 2.8 litre turbodiesel. Toyota expects diesel will continue to account for over 98 percent of Prado sales.
A new six-speed automatic also joins the diesel, complementing a traditional six-speed manual transmission.
There are also a small number of specification upgrades – chief of which is the addition of sat-nav as standard to the volume-selling GXL variant – but everything else about the Prado remains largely unchanged.
There are no changes to suspension settings nor interior trim, and the range structure remains the same: GX at the bottom, GXL in the middle and VX and Kakadu rounding out the “top end’ (heh heh).
Maximum towing capacity remains at 2500kg.
According to Toyota, the GXL is expected to continue to account for around 77 percent of sales, the GX for 10 percent, and the VX and Kakadu around 13 percent of Prado sales volume.
Wtih 130kW of power and 450Nm of torque, the new 1GD 2.8 litre turbodiesel boasts increases in output of 2.4 and 9.7 percent respectively – a handy boost given the engine it replaces required 3.0 litres of displacement to achieve less.
However, that peak figure only comes if you go for an auto-equipped diesel model. The entry-level manual models produce 420Nm.
With common-rail diesel injection, low-friction valvetrain and ancillaries, a variable geometry turbocharger that’s 50 percent more responsive and clever ECU mapping, the 1GD can produce up to 80 percent of maximum torque from as low as 1200rpm.
Throttle mapping has also been tuned to provide a smoother transition from coasting to accelerating, and the vanes of the variable geometry turbine can close up to improve engine braking performance – a necessity thanks to the reduced internal friction, Toyota says.
The six-speed automatic that Toyota says 95 percent of buyers will opt for has a shorter first gear compared to the outgoing five-speed, resulting in better low-speed crawl performance.
At the other end of the scale, a tall sixth gear promotes highway-speed fuel economy.
Toyota says it has programmed the six-speed slushbox to deliver more intelligent shift behaviour, and hold lower gears when appropriate – such as when accelerating up a hill.
The combination of new automatic and a modern diesel engine sees big fuel economy gains of 10.2 percent for the manual turbodiesel models, with consumption dropping to 7.9 l/100km on the combined cycle.
Auto-equipped diesels drink slightly more at 8.0 l/100km.
The 4.0 litre petrol V6 now has 207kW, an increase of 5kW over the outgoing model. Torque remains at 381Nm, while its thirst raises slightly to 11.6 l/100km.
Both powertrains take power to all four wheels via a permanent four-wheel drive system, which carries over mostly unchanged. The top-spec Kakadu gets adaptive variable suspension, as well as self-levelling rear air springs.
