Toyota is officially the top-selling automaker in the word image
Toyota Motors has finally released its annual sales and production report and, despite a slight drop, the numbers show the company remained the world’s top-selling automaker last year.
It is for the fourth year in a row in which Toyota Motors finishes as the world’s best-selling automaker, topping 10 million deliveries last year and thus staying in front of the Volkswagen Group. Toyota’s global sales, including those of its Daihatsu Motor and Hino Motors subsidiaries, totalled 10,151,000 vehicles in 2015, marking a slight decrease of 0.8 percent over a year earlier. For its core brand only, deliveries stood at 9,189,000 units, up 0.5 percent. Toyota managed to hold its top spot mainly due its rival emissions scandal, which affected the demand and drew a halt in sales of diesels in some markets, Volkswagen making efforts to mend its reputation after the September disclosures. Analysts are predicting Toyota’s hegemony will probably not be challenged for the next few years, as VW will take time to adjust its strategies for markets such as the US and Europe. To consolidate its position as worldwide leader, the Japanese automaker considers to buy the rest of its 51 percent-owned Daihatsu unit, to improve its market share in the emerging markets, like Indonesia and Malaysia.
Toyota was the only carmaker topping 10 million units last year, after the Volkswagen Group announced earlier this month it handed over 9,930,600 vehicles to customers worldwide in 2015, falling 2 percent from the record 10,137,400 cars in 2014. In its annual report, General Motors said that its global sales totaled 9.84 million vehicles in 2015, up 0.2 percent for the company’s third consecutive year of record sales, thus the Detroit-based company remaining the third largest automaker.
