Toyota details Takata recall expansion, adding 1.6M vehicles
Toyota has detailed its latest Takata recall expansions, affecting approximately 1.6 million vehicles sold in the US market.
The Japanese supplier was recently forced to recall all airbag inflators that employ ammonium nitrate without a desiccant to keep the chemical dry.
“According to Takata, a safety defect may arise in front passenger air bag inflators in the involved vehicles due to inflator propellant degradation occurring after prolonged exposure to high absolute humidity, high temperatures and high temperature cycling,” Toyota said in a statement. “This may result in an inflator rupture when the air bag deploys.”
The expansion affects the 2009-2011 Corolla and Matrix; the 2006-2011 Yaris; the 2010-2011 4Runner; the 2011 Sienna; the 2008-2011 Scion xB; the 2007-2011 Lexus ES; the 2010-2011 Lexus GX; and the 2006-2011 Lexus IS.
The list could continue to grow as automakers identify more vehicles that use the dangerous inflators.
