Even if Toyota has not yet released its 2015 sales results, the company is expected to retain its no 1 position as the world’s best-selling automaker, while the Corolla model is set to become the best-selling car.

Toyota, which has not yet released its annual figures for 2015, is expected to retain its global auto sales crown and to top 10 million units, a lead it has held since 2012. But a report from the tracking service Focus2Move points out Toyota Corolla has improved again its sales numbers, with customers ordering 1,339,024 of the compact model last year. In 2015, Corolla climbed 4.7 percent, accounting for 1.5 percent of the global new vehicle market. It also marked a first time ever for a model to be sold over 1.3 million units, according to Focus2Move. The US was the top market for Corolla with 363,332 sales, followed by China with 300,641 and Japan at 109,027 cars.

A solid boost was also received by Volkswagen’s compact Golf sales which, despite the cheating scandal, increased by 8.4 percent, at 1,041,279 vehicles delivered worldwide. VW’s hatchback managed to jump on the second spot, outpacing the Ford Focus, which dropped to 4th on the list. This slip is somehow surprising, as the Detroit-based maker’s compact model was sitting behind the Toyota Corolla for quite some time. However, a 19.4 percent sharp fall for the Focus meant 828,221 sales last year, down from 1,025,476 units in 2014.

The good news for Ford is that its F-Series climbed up to the third spot, selling 920,172 of its full-size trucks in 2015, a 1.6 percent year-over-year rise. The top five is rounded up by Toyota Camry, with 754,154 units sold last year, 1.9 percent fewer than in 2014. After releasing its annual sales, GM remains the third largest automaker in the world after Volkswagen AG which reported sales of 9.93 million units for 2015, with Toyota most likely in the lead.
