Toyota Corolla iM takes podium finish in Minnesota rally
Engineers from Toyota‘s Michigan R&D headquarters are celebrating their first-ever rally podium finish in a Corolla iM.
The iM made its dirt racing debut at the Susquehannock Trail Performance Rally (STPR) in June, where it was run completely stock to determine what modifications would be needed.
“STPR was a shake-down for the iM,” said Toyota body design engineer adn driver Brian Thurgate.
Toyota chassis engineer and driver/co-driver Kyle Steinkamp suggests the rally team borrowed components from other models in the company’s lineup, beefing up the suspension to improve handling and durability.
“At STPR we had issues with damage to the exhaust and other components from rocks and rough landings after jumps,” added fellow driver/co-driver Colin Ravenscroft. “With the changes we made, we didn’t have any of those issues at Ojibwe.”
After placing third in Minnesota, the team will head back to Michigan for the Lake Superior Performance Rally (LSPR) in October.
