Toyota has launched a new subsidiary called Toyota Connected which aims to help “humanize the driving experience.”
The new company will be based out of Plano, Texas and will serve as a data science hub for Toyota’s global operations. Toyota Connected will focus on delivering seamless contextual services as well as using “cutting-edge data analytics to support product development for customers, dealers, distributors, and partners.”
Toyota was coy on specifics but says the company will engage in a number of different projects including in-car services and telematics as well as Internet of Things (IoT) connectivity. The company will also focus on smart city integration, safety, and personalization.
Toyota Connected will work in cooperation with Microsoft and will “leverage the power of data science through Microsoft’s Azure cloud technology to develop predictive, contextual, and intuitive services that help to humanize the driving experience while pushing the technology into the background.”
In a statement, Toyota Connected CEO Zack Hicks said “Toyota Connected will help free our customers from the tyranny of technology. From telematics services that learn from your habits and preferences, to use-based insurance pricing models that respond to actual driving patterns, to connected vehicle networks that can share road condition and traffic information, our goal is to deliver services that make lives easier.”
