Toyota has expanded its Takata airbag recall, adding another 198,000 cars.
The Japanese automaker has announced that the 2008 Toyota Corolla and Corolla Matrix as well as the 2008-2010 Lexus SC430 have been included in this seemingly endless airbag recall. According to Toyota, the affected vehicles are equipped with a Takata-produced dual-stage front passenger airbag inflator that could potentially rupture when deployed during a crash.
Owners of these affected Toyota and Lexus vehicles will be notified by first-class mail of the ongoing call-back. Dealers will replace the airbag inflator or the airbag assembly with a newly manufactured one at no cost.
As of late February, more than 29-million airbag inflators have been recalled, but an additional 70 to 90 million are being examined by U.S. safety regulators. Takata has already agreed to pay a $70-million penalty to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). The company is having issues keeping up with demand for replacement inflators and has already enlisted the assistance of one of its suppliers, Autoliv.
