Large-scale Lego Ideas model project features over 1,700 pieces

Well-restored and even cursorily-restored Toyota Land Cruisers are bringing serious coin at auctions, and preserved examples are being picked from old mining towns and ranches in the west as you’re reading this. What’s a fan of old Land Cruisers to do?

If all goes well, a Lego version of the veteran 40 Series could head to stores sometime in the near future. A very large and very realistic Lego Land Cruiser BJ42 has been created by Matthew Inman, and submitted for voting on the Lego Ideas website, where it could advance to an official review stage and become a commercial set if it gets enough votes.

“My first car was a diesel 40 Series Landcruiser, and apart from the sentimental value, I knew the distinctive body shape and interesting features would make a great model,” Inman writes. “Having already built the Lego Mini Cooper and the Kombi, the 40 Series Landcruiser rounds out the trio nicely for those who like to get off-road.”

The specific model he chose to create from Lego bricks is the BJ42, one of the all-time favorites of the legendary 4×4. Inman’s version uses approximately 1,700 pieces and has plenty of detailed features like a complete interior, opening doors and a ‘roo bar up front.

“This model reproduces unique features of the BJ42 – the pinnacle of the 40 Series – such as the triple windscreen wipers of course with perhaps the only thing missing is the zebra-striped pattern on the seats,” Inman says. “I also included lots of detail with foot well vents on both driver and passenger sides, the chassis and running gear along with the leaf springs.”

Once a Lego Ideas project accumulates 10,000 votes in a given amount of time, it advances to the company review stage where it is evaluated by toy designers and planners. Once it clears that stage, the project can go into production and become a set you can buy online or in a Lego store.

If it reaches production the Land Cruiser would join the Mini Cooper which has been on sale for a while now, in a similar scale.
