Rugged ute-based off-roader sales: MU-X beating Pajero Sport, Everest, Fortuner and Colorado 7

We get asked a lot of questions about the sales performance each month of Australia’s fleet of rugged, ute-based family off-roaders.

We speak for the Ford Everest, Holden Colorado 7, Isuzu MU-X, Mitsubishi Pajero Sport and Toyota Fortuner, based respectively on the Ranger, Colorado, D-Max, Triton and HiLux.

This is a segment within a segment, given they are all classified as large SUVs alongside much softer options such as the Toyota Kluger, and larger (and generally, with one exception) pricier offerings such as the Prado.

Given the fact that three of these contenders (Everest, Fortuner and Pajero Sport) all launched here within the past six months, it’s also a mini-segment that’s growing fast.

With all that said, though, it’s the old faithful of the class, the Isuzu MU-X, that remains the winner thanks to very sharp pricing. It managed 508 sales in February (up 6 per cent) and has 1003 sales this year so far.

This puts it ahead of the Pajero Sport, off to a strong start with 396 in February and accounting for 732 this year. On top of this, Mitsubishi has also sold 159 old Challengers, the Pajero Sport’s predecessor.

Close behind is the Ford Everest with 377 sales in February and 664 for year year. Close behind is the supply-restricted Toyota Fortuner with 336/610. Rounding it out is the Holden Colorado 7 with 232/511.

For context, the Toyota Prado managed a staggering 1295 sales in February, taking its yearly total to 2389. Softer options such as the Kluger (959) and Subaru Outback (869) also well and truly trounced this more rugged quintet last month, while in a higher price-segment, the BMW X5 did 451.
