2016 Lexus LX 570
Lexus has given one of its oldest models a new lease on the high-lux life. With refreshed 2016 versions, the LX 570 sport-utility vehicle gets a new eight-speed automatic and some significant appearance and feature changes.
The automaker officially pulled the wraps off both the LX 570 and new turbo four-cylinder variants of the GS—the GS 200t—at the Monterey Peninsula’s long weekend of automotive enthusiast, lifestyle, and auction events surrounding the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance, which has now become essentially a summer auto show for the automakers.
The 2016 Lexus LX 570 keeps its strong 383-horsepower, 5.7-liter V-8 engine, but gains an eight-speed automatic transmission in place of the outgoing model’s six-speed. There’s also a new Drive Mode Select system, like what’s already used in other Lexus models, that lets the driver control powertrain and suspension settings, including those of the Adaptive Variable Suspension (AVS).
Lexus has also added several high-value items to the LX 570’s standard-feature set. A Panoramic View Monitor is now included, as is a Blind Spot Monitor with Rear Cross Traffic Assist. Another standard feature is the Climate Concierge, which monitors four different zones of the interior—this is a cabin that’s large enough to have its microclimates, after all—and can vary the fan speed and temperature of the vents as well as settings for the seats and steering wheel. Second-row sunshades are now included, too.
The Lexus LX, which is closely related to the Toyota Land Cruiser and built on a sturdy, off-road-capable body-on-frame structure, and it hasn’t been completely redesigned since the 2008 model year. The model got a significant refresh, covering interior and exterior styling, for the 2013 model year, but it’s carried over with the same engine (and engine output) since 2008.
That said, its available safety and convenience feature set is pretty impressive—including things like a head-up display, Dynamic Radar Cruise Control, Intelligent High Beam, and Intuitive Park Assist.
A rear-seat entertainment system now includes big 11.6-inch screens at the rear of each of the front seats (although they protrude back into those rear spaces a bit); there are also USB ports for the rear seats and separate climate controls for rear passengers.
The big, body-on-frame LX also finally goes all-in with a one-piece version of the familial Lexus spindle grille, flanked by LED headlamps, turn signals, and fog lamps. While it sounds like a relatively minor change, in person it quite radically changes the look of the front end and the stance of the vehicle—both definitely for the better.
