Next-gen Toyota Prius Set for September 9 Vegas Unveiling

Toyota will unveil its fourth-generation Prius hybrid in Las Vegas on September 8 (September 9 AEST), ahead of its anticipated official launch at the Tokyo Motor Show in October.

Speaking to Bloomberg, Toyota spokesperson Ryo Sakai said the new Prius will be shown to the media in Las Vegas first, however would not go into specifics regarding when production or sales would begin.

Other information about Toyota’s new hybrid is also thin on the ground, though it’s expected to be built on Toyota’s new modular TNGA architecture and drop roughly100kg compared to the current model.

Reports last month suggest fuel economy will drop to 2.5 l/100km for the standard Prius – a decrease in consumption of 1.4 l/100km.

The plug-in variant, meanwhile, is expected to sip just 1.42 l/100km and boast an all-electric range of roughly 50km.

Other reports say that the new Prius’ engine will boast a thermal efficiency of around 40 percent, which – if true – would make the new Prius’ petrol engine the most efficient internal combustion motor ever fitted to a production car.

Expect more solid intel to surface on September 9 as the 2016 Prius makes its first official appearance.
