New Toyota Prius concept or variant teased ahead of New York reveal
A new Toyota Prius concept or variant will be revealed at next week’s New York auto show, but no-one outside the company is quite sure what it will be.
Overnight, Toyota’s American arm issued a short statement about the upcoming car. The Japanese automaker says that the Prius concept will feature “stand-out style, intelligent eco-tech” and will be “the next mechanical marvel in the Prius lineup”.
From the teaser image (above) we can see that the New York-bound Prius vehicle will have a completely different rear-end design to the just released fourth-generation hatch.
As far as body styles go, it’s unlikely that the concept will preview a successor to the Prius V people mover.
It’s possible that the depression in the LED ring and rear deck, as well as the shadow in the middle of the rear windscreen, are caused by a double bubble roof, indicating that the concept could well be a coupe. Failing that, the car will most likely be a sedan or another hatchback.
Under the skin, the concept could sport a new-generation plug-in hybrid drivetrain. It might even have a fully electric drivetrain, and serve as a challenger to the Nissan Leaf, and the upcoming Chevrolet Bolt/Opel Ampera-e and Tesla Model 3.
If Toyota is going to reveal a plug-in hybrid or full EV, the Prius concept may include wireless inductive charging, some form of intelligent charging technology, and the ability to feed back into the electricity grid or power a home.
All of this is just speculation, of course, as there’s just so little information to go on. Regardless of what it is, we’ll find out next week.
