New Rumors Emerge About The Toyota Supra’s Engine

We hope this news turns out to be true.

We know that Toyota is in the middle of a joint project with BMW that should result in a Z4 replacement and next-generation Supra. Early reports claimed that the Supra would get a four-cylinder plug-in hybrid drivetrain, but now there are rumors that the Supra will receive a new Lexus engine. Japanese magazine Mag-X quoted Toyota insiders who said Lexus is developing a new engine, codenamed 943F. The 3.0-liter twin-turbo V6 with more than 400 horsepower and more than 300 lb-ft of torque would ultimately make its way into the new Supra.

New Rumors Emerge About The Toyota Supra‘s Engine

This rumor makes a lot of sense. Lexus is one of the only luxury brands that does not have a forced-induction six-cylinder engine. The 3.5-liter naturally aspirated engine that Lexus uses is a bit long in the tooth, so we could definitely see a turbocharged unit in the works. The 943F would be the first forced-induction V6 in Toyota’s history. The company has built turbocharged inline-six engines before, but never a V6. We would much rather see a turbocharged V6 than some hybrid drivetrain, so we hope this rumor turns out to be true.
