New Lexus IS gets exterior and interior upgrades

The new Lexus IS has been revealed at the Beijing Motor Show 2016. The facelifted compact executive saloon gets a number of changes to keep it fresh, although it won’t hit UK shores until January next year.

The car gets some new headlights and an updated front grille design, which together make up the current Lexus family face as seen on the new RX, NX, RC and GS models. It’s a sleeker look overall, with deep air intakes on the front and the now-familiar large spindle grille. Standard 17-inch alloy wheels add to the sporty look, plus new L-shaped rear lights. F-Sport models get some extra sporty features, too.

A new infotainment display screen is the main change inside the car. The new 10.3-inch screen is bigger than before, and there are some changes to the user interface to make it a bit easier to use. There’s also a redesigned dash, new stitching around the dials and a set of cupholders.

Lexus’ pre-collision warning, lane departure warning, auto high beam and radar cruise contorl safety systems are all standard now, too.

Like the RC coupe, the IS will have two petrol engines, the 2.0-litre petrol in the 200t model and a 2.5-litre unit combined with an electric motor in the hybrid IS 300h model. These have 220bhp and 242bhp respectively. Of course, there’s also the 470bhp RC F, and we could see a racy IS F model with the same V8 engine further down the line as well.

The new Lexus IS is likely to go on sale in the UK in January 2017.
