Lexus’ New Trademarks Suggest Yet Another SUV Is Headed Our Way

Does Lexus really need another SUV?

According to reports from AutoGuide, Lexus has just trademarked three new model names. The UX200, UX250 and UX250h are rumored to be variants of a new seven-seat SUV for the luxury automaker. These models will likely arrive at some point in 2016 and will be based on an elongated version of the RX. Lexus dealerships have been begging for a three-row model to compete with cars like the Audi Q7, Acura MDX, and Infiniti QX60. Lexus already sells the very large GX and LX, but those cater to buyers in a higher tax bracket.

We think that a three-row SUV from Lexus would be a very good sales move. However, we do not think that this UX is going to be that model. Based on the 200 and 250 numbers in the names, this will likely be an even smaller SUV to slot under the NX in the Lexus lineup. This sub-compact luxury SUV could be based on the upcoming Toyota C-HR shown in Geneva. If this is the case, we think that Lexus is starting to spread its SUV lineup a bit too thin. Sub-compact crossovers are a bit silly, because they are really just hatchbacks, albeit more popular ones to American consumers. What do you think this new UX from Lexus will be?
