The behemoth of the Lexus range, the LX570 SUV has come in for a massive mid-life overhaul which sees new sheetmetal applied to every exterior panel with the exception of the carry-over doors and roof.
Inside the interior has also been completely revamped, with a new dash and console design and a massive 12.3-inch infotainment display featuring Lexus’ Remote Touch Interface.
The changes follow an update to the LandCruiser 200, on which the LX570 is based, which also saw changes to the interior and exterior, without being quite as far-reaching as the Lexus updates.
The changes also extend beneath the skin, with a new eight-speed automatic replacing the previous model’s six-speed unit, and Drive Mode Select added to the LX for the first time.
While the exterior changes are the most noticeable, Lexus has worked hard to lift the levels of equipment inside the LX570, to keep it up to speed against the revised Mercedes-Benz GLS and Range Rover Vogue.
LED lighting now features at the front end for both head and fog lights, as well as sequential indicators. LEDs have also been used for ambient lighting, and cargo bay lighting, while interior lighting is operated via touch-sensitive controls.
Infotainment is provided by a 12.3 inch monitor, controlled by Lexus’ Remote touch interface, while a larger 4.2-inch display features in the instrument cluster. Lexus Enform connected mobility is also included.
Second row passengers are now treated to manual sun blinds, and larger 11.6-inch high definition rear seat entertainment screens.
Safety is bolstered thanks to the addition of Lexus Safety System Plus (LSS+) which incorporates all-speed active cruise control, lane departure warning, automatic adaptive high beam, blind spot monitor, rear cross traffic alert, tyre pressure warning, and pre-collision assist with autonomous emergency braking.
That’s just the new additions, as before the LX570 also features 19-speaker Mark Levinson audio, proximity key with push-button start, four-zone climate control, front cooler box, heated front seats and four-camera around view monitor.
A single Enhavcment Pack is also available for $16,500, combining 21-inch alloy wheels (in place of the standard 20-inch items), heated steering wheel, front seat ventilation plus heated and ventilated second row seats.
Beneath the bonnet of the LX570 lies a 5.7 litre naturally aspirated V8 producing 270kW of power and 530Nm of torque.
While the engine is a carry-over, the eight-speed automatic is new and features artificial intelligence shift control, designed to alter shift patterns based on driver inputs and road conditions.
Drive Mode Select has also been added to the hulking Lexus’ equipment list allowing the driver to select from Normal, Eco, Comfort, Sport and Sport S+ driving modes, controlling throttle, transmission, adaptive suspension, air conditioning, and steering.
A Customise feature also allows for independent adjustment of elements to suit the driver’s taste.
The Lexus LX570 is also ready to venture off road with a dual-range transfer case and Torsen mechanical limited-slip centre differential.
Four-wheel hydro-pneumatic suspension with active height control and adaptive variable suspension provides on-road comfort with maximum off-road traction.
There’s also crawl control, allowing low speed off-road maneuvering without the need for throttle or brake inputs, and multi-terrain ABS tuned to work on low-grip surfaces like sand or gravel.
Towing capacity is rated at 3500kg
The LX570 arrives in one model grade, priced at $140,500 plus on-road costs, representing a $6,190 price rise over the outgoing model. The sole option available is the Enhancement Pack which adds 21-inch alloy wheels, a heated steering wheel, ventilated front seats, and heated and ventilated rear seats for $16,500
