Lexus has announced the hybrid flagship of its all-new LC high-end coupe range will make its first public appearance at the Geneva Motor Show next month, just two months after the debut of the tasty LC 500 at the Detroit Auto Show.
Dubbed the Lexus LC 500h, the hybrid partner to the LC 500 bears no substantial external differences besides a blue hue to its badges and some extra hybrid badges at the rear of the side skirts.
We don’t know what will power it though – those details will have to wait until March 1 when the doors to the Geneva show open.
Could it be an electron-boosted version of the LC 500’s 351kW/530Nm 5.0 litre V8? Or perhaps a hybrid V6 like the LF-LC show car that preceded it? We can’t say for certain.
Lexus’ press release is predictably vague, but does drop this nugget of info: the LC 500h will be equipped with “Lexus’ next generation hybrid powertrain, the Lexus Multi Stage Hybrid System”, which will eventually replace the existing Lexus Hybrid Drive technology.
With Lexus’ current hybrid hardware not as flexible as others now on the market (there’s a limited EV mode function, no plug-in capability and fuel must be consumed every time the car is started), does this mean Lexus will finally delve into the world of range-extended plug-in hybrids?
Permitting owners to tap into cheap electricity and run their cars without burning any fuel would allow Lexus to compete on an even footing with the new generation of hybrids coming from BMW, Audi and Mercedes-Benz.
We can’t say with any certainty whether that will be the case however. All will be revealed at Geneva.
