Lexus IS The Latest To Go Turbo With New 200t

Lexus has transplanted its new 2.0 litre turbocharged petrol engine into a third model to create the IS 200t.

The new model was first rumoured in April last year, before the Japanese carmaker registered the IS 200t name a month later.

The IS joins the NX 200t SUV, which arrived in Australia this year, while the RX 200t will be officially launched in overseas markets by year’s end.

The IS 200t packs roughly the same punch as the NX, with 180kW of power and 350Nm of torque available to the driver.

Matched with Lexus’ eight-speed automatic transmission with paddle-shifters – as seen in the RC F performer – the IS 200t can hit 100km/h from rest in seven seconds flat, on its way to a top speed of 230km/h.

The IS 200t is the first of Lexus’ sedans to feature a varying gear shift, which adjusts the up and down changes according to G-forces.

The transmission also downshifts automatically under braking, before selecting the most suitable gear for the best response as the driver exits a corner.

Lexus promises “no turbo-lag” and “high fuel efficiency” from its latest 200t along with “instantaneous torque” and “a better turbo sound”.

The fuel figure is 7.0 l/100km when fitted with 17-inch wheels (rising to 7.2 with the 18-inch wheels), and the 200t is Euro 6 emissions compliant.

An updated IS range arrived in Australia late last year for 2015, and Lexus later cut the price of all of its IS models in line with Australia’s Free Trade Agreement with Japan.

The 2015 Lexus IS 200t will be available to European buyers from September, while an Australian launch is yet to be confirmed.
