Lexus Creates Functional Hoverboard Concept

Forget wheels: Lexus claims to have built a fully functional hoverboard. Just like the devices immortalized in science-fiction movies for years, the Lexus hoverboard is essentially a high-tech skateboard that “floats” above the ground. No word yet on whether Marty McFly will be able to take it for a test-ride.

The Lexus hoverboard concept looks like an oversized skateboard, and its nose sports the same spindle-grille graphics seen on the front of modern Lexus cars, including the RC and RC F coupes. Lexus hasn’t been too specific as to how the device works, but says it uses superconductors cooled by liquid nitrogen and permanent magnets to make the board levitate through magnetic repulsion. The result is “frictionless movement,” the company claims. “At Lexus we constantly challenge ourselves and our partners to push the boundaries of what is possible,” Lexus executive vice president Mark Templin said in a statement. “That determination, combined with our passion and expertise for design and innovation, is what led us to take on the Hoverboard project.”

Lexus is currently testing the hoverboard in Spain, but says there are no plans to put it into series production. Instead, the functional levitation device will be used as part of Lexus’ “Amazing in Motion” ad campaign this summer. Take a closer look at the Lexus hoverboard in action in the video below.
