Large Lexus coupe photographed testing in California

A large Lexus coupe with plenty of visual similarity to the LF-LC concept has been spied testing on the west coast of America.

Automotive journalist Matt Farah spotted the mysterious coupe out on the roads of California and posted these images to his Instagram account.

Given the shape of the tail-lights and the wing mirrors, it’s safe to assume that the vehicle seen here is a pre-production prototype Lexus coupe. It should also be noted that the long curved bonnet, the elongated rear deck and the upward sweep of the side window line all faithfully mirror the lines of the LF-LC concept, which was first unveiled in 2011.

According to Farah, the Lexus prototype was travelling in a convoy with a Lexus LS sedan, BMW 6 Series coupe and a Porsche 911.

A report last year suggested that Lexus’ new range-topping coupe will be offered with three drivetrains. At the bottom of the range there will reportedly be a naturally aspirated 335kW 5.0-litre V8, a motor that’s lifted straight from the RC F coupe.

The next step up in the range is claimed to be a hybrid model with about 373kW of power. At the top of the pile, it’s said, is an F model with a turbocharged V8 motor cranking out roughly 447kW.

It’s unknown at this stage what badge the new coupe will wear, but rumours suggest that LC and SC are the front runners. Last year, Alain Uyttenhoven, vice president of Lexus Europe, indicated that the new large coupe will go on sale some time during 2016.
