Is this the next Toyota Prius?

Leaked images posted on a Taiwanese website may have given us the best look yet at the next-gen Toyota Prius.

Interestingly, Toyota will offer two distinctly different versions of the next Prius. The standard gasoline-electric hybrid model will feature a highly-futuristic front end that will borrow design cues from the hydrogen-powered Mirai, while the plug-in hybrid model will boast a more conventional-looking front end.

Front fascia aside, the two cars are expected to be nearly identical when viewed from the outside. The rear end will get a discreet spoiler integrated into the hatch and boomerang-shaped tail lamps that will stretch far into the lower bumper.

As previously reported, the new Prius will use an updated version of Toyota’s time-tested Hybrid Synergy Drive system. The hatchback will retain the current model’s nickel metal hybride battery pack, but the standard hybrid’s gas mileage will improve to about 55 mpg in a mixed cycle.

Toyota delayed the launch of the new Prius by about six months. The Hybrid model is now scheduled to make its public debut this October at the Tokyo Motor Show, and it will be shown in the United States for the first time shortly after at the Los Angeles Motor Show. The more efficient Plug-In Hybrid model won’t bow until next year.
