Fiat unveils Mitsubishi-based Fullback pickup in Dubai

Fiat has traveled to the Dubai Motor Show to introduce a new pickup truck dubbed Fullback.

The Fullback stands out as Fiat’s first-ever body-on-frame truck. Essentially a re-badged Mitsubishi Triton (sold as the L200 in some markets), it gains a Fiat-specific grille with horizontal slats, a revised front bumper, and new alloy wheels. The rest of the truck is plucked directly from the Mitsubishi parts bin.

Fiat offers the Fullback as a single cab, an extended cab, a double cab, and a chassis cab. It can haul 2,500 pounds in its most capable configuration.

In Europe, the Fullback is available with a Mitsubishi-sourced 2.4-liter turbodiesel four-cylinder engine that can be ordered with either 150 or 180 horsepower. A six-speed manual transmission and rear-wheel drive come standard, and buyers can pay extra for a five-speed automatic, all-wheel drive, or both.

Buyers outside of Europe can choose between a 2.5-liter turbodiesel that makes either 110 or 178 horsepower and a 2.4-liter gasoline-burning engine rated at 132 ponies. A five-speed manual transmission comes standard, and a five-speed automatic is offered at an extra cost.

The 2016 Fiat Fullback is scheduled to go on sale in a host of global markets including Europe, the Middle East, and Africa starting next spring. At the time of writing Fiat isn’t planning on taking on the Chevrolet Colorado/ GMC Canyon twins and the Toyota Tacoma in the United States.
