5 cars with skyrocketing sales so far in 2015
As digital editor Andy Stoy rightly points out elsewhere on this site, even with new-vehicles sales soaring thus far in ’15, not every new car or truck is flying off the shelves.
These are though. In some cases they’re riding the SUV craze; some are beneficiaries of inexpensive fuel in certain cases and some are simply great to drive. No matter the reason, here are five cars looking at double-digit year-over-year sales increases through May 2015.
Mini Cooper S — sales up 7,800
Mini people love their Minis, and the Cooper S is proof. The company is adept at bringing out updates at the just the right time — the recent John Cooper Works and its sporty exhaust and suspension is an example — and customers can’t seem to get enough.
Staff quote: “The Cooper S’ kart-like steering made the Mini name famous. Combine that with the turbo four, and this thing is just flat-out fun to drive.”
Toyota Tacoma — sales up 10,000
The Tacoma numbers are even more impressive when you consider 2015 is the last year for this model — a new-for-’16 Tacoma is coming this fall. The cult of Tacoma, built on the little truck’s legendary toughness, makes for legions of fans.
Staff quote: “We enjoy the Toyota Tacoma in a Throwback Thursday kind of way — it’s a rugged, trucky truck — an excellent workhorse.”
Range Rover — sales up 2,778
A nearly 2,800-unit sales increase might not sound like a lot, but when you only do around 20K a year total it can be significant. In this case, the Range Rover: It’s been on the market for two and a half years; sales started red hot right out of the gate and haven’t slowed one bit. Credit cheap gas and the Rover’s ultra-high refinement levels.
Staff quote: “Few, if any, big SUVs ride as well on-road as a Range Rover, and they’re good-looking outside. The interior is just superb. Fit and finish looks and feels as perfect as most any luxury car at this price and higher.”
Honda CR-V — sales up 6,200
One of the hottest vehicles for sale right now, the CR-V leads all SUV sales so far this year, tapping into customers’ want for a small SUV in an inexpensive, fuss-free package.
Staff quote: “The CR-V is a good choice no matter what trim level you get — if you want a well-rounded SUV, you should be looking at this Honda.”
Volkswagen Golf — sales up 16,000
Yeah, 16K is a whopping increase, but VW’s Golf is a bit of an outlier because it’s a replacement model. We include it here because the new one is so damned good. No matter what model you choose — standard Golf, GTI, R, even the e-Golf, you’re getting one of the planet’s best-built, best-handling small cars. We couldn’t say that about the outgoing model.
Staff quote: “Golfs are excellent small cars at competitive prices. The cars have grown up a lot — they’re more mature now. By that we mean more solid and refined.”
