Toyota introduced the production-ready C-HR in European specification last month at the Geneva Motor Show. Now, the subcompact crossover is getting ready for its trip to United States where it will be sold starting with next spring as a 2018 model year. The U.S.-bound C-HR was supposed to wear the Scion badge, but since Toyota is saying “scionara” to its youth-oriented brand, the tiny high-riding model will wear the logo with the three overlapping ellipses.
While the exterior and interior design will remain essentially the same, that won’t be the case with the engine. Europeans get to pick from a turbocharged 1.2-liter with 115 horsepower (85 kilowatts) and a hybridized, 122-hp 1.8-liter. Moreover, in select countries (excluding UK), Toyota will sell the C-HR with a naturally-aspirated 2.0-liter.
As for the U.S. model, some are saying only a naturally-aspirated 2.0-liter will be available and it will be exclusively hooked up to a continuously variable transmission. As standard, power will be channeled to the front axle, but those willing to pay more will be able to opt for an all-wheel-drive arrangement.
The Euro-spec C-HR is being assembled at Toyota’s factory in Turkey, but it’s not known at this point whether this facility will also be in charge of putting together the North American variant.
