The 2016 Toyota Prius has been named a Top Safety Pick Plus by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS).
That is the highest accolade that the institute hands out, and is earned by scoring a ‘good’ rating in the small overlap front, moderate overlap front, side, roof strength and head restraint tests. In able to get the ‘plus’ added on, the vehicle must het at least an advanced or superior rating in front crash prevention.
The 2016 Prius’ structure was improved to help it pass the small overlap crash test, which the previous generation only scored an ‘acceptable’ rating on. The 2016 model had intrusion of 2-inches at the upper door-hinge pillar and at the brake and parking pedals. Movement from the crash-test dummy was well controlled and measurements taken from the dummy showing a low risk of injury.
For front crash prevention, the Prius avoided collisions at both 12 mph and 25 mph, the two IIHS test speeds. It also has a forward collision warning system.
