2016 Toyota HiLux pricing and specifications

Pricing and specifications for the 2016 Toyota HiLux have finally been revealed.

The launch of the new, eighth-generation Toyota HiLux ute comes at a crucial time – there has been more activity in the light commercial vehicle segment this year than in recent memory, with new models and updates all taking the shine off what has been the best-selling model in the segment for years.

Indeed, HiLux sales are in a touch of a slump, as existing stock of the previous-generation model sells out. In August, the Ford Ranger outsold the Toyota HiLux for the first time, while the Mitsubishi Triton also managed to top its Japanese rival.

Still, the HiLux remains the top-seller overall for 2015, and it is also Toyota’s second-most popular model in Australia.

Toyota Australia president, Dave Buttner, said at the launch of the new HiLux in Victoria this week that the company understands the importance of this model, which replaces the seventh-generation model that was on sale from 2005-2015.

“We’ve sold just on 2.1 million vehicles, and 18 per cent of that 2.1 million vehicles has been this product,” said Buttner.

“We never take success for granted. We cannot be arrogant and conceited in the marketplace,” he said.

And with 31 variants – eight more than before – including a dozen 4×2 models and 19 4×4 versions, there is no doubting that the brand is eager to stay in the number one spot in the ute segment.

Pricing and equipment

With this update, buyers will be happy to learn that things aren’t dramatically different to the model it replaces in terms of pricing – but the standard equipment levels on all models has risen considerably in light of new and revamped competition.

Standard fitment to all new-generation Toyota HiLux models is air conditioning – would you believe that it was still a $2051 option on Workmate models? – as well as a touchscreen media system and Bluetooth phone and audio streaming.

The entry models get a 6.1-inch screen, while upper spec models have a 7.0-inch unit with extended connectivity, and the flagship model gets satellite navigation and digital radio. It’s the first ute in the class to come with a touchscreen as standard across the range.

Every HiLux will now get seven airbags as standard, including dual front, front-side and curtain airbags, along with a driver’s knee airbag. All models in the pick-up/tub-back genre will have a reverse-view camera as standard, while it’s optional on cab-chassis models, too.

The entry-point to the range is the Workmate, while the mid-range offering is the SR and the flagship model remains the SR5 (though buyers can specify a SR5+ for the diesel auto dual-cab).

What engines are offered depends on the specification.

Drivetrains on offer

As we’ve previously reported, the new HiLux range will come with a choice of two petrol (a four-cylinder and a six-cylinder) and two diesel (both four-cylinder) engines.

The 2.7-litre naturally aspirated four-pot with 122kW and 245Nm, and according to the brand the engine has been reworked for better consumption and refinement. That engine comes with a six-speed manual or six-speed automatic gearbox.

Fuel use for that engine is claimed between 10.7L and 11.1 litres per 100km for the manual (depending on bodystyle), and 10.4-10.9L for the auto.

For the very few buyers who wish for a petrol engine there is a revamped 4.0-litre six-cylinder engine producing 175kW of power and 376Nm of torque.

This engine will be offered with a six-speed auto only (fuel use: 11.5L/100km for the 4×2 and 12.0L/100km for the 4×4).

The entry-level diesel is a 2.4-litre four-cylinder turbo unit producing 110kW of power and 343Nm of torque for the 4×2 models, and 110kW and 400Nm of torque for the 4×4 variants. It’s interesting to note that this new 2.4 has more power and equal torque to the old 3.0-litre diesel.

The all-new 2.8-litre turbo diesel produces 125kW of power and 343Nm in 4×2 models, while the Hi-Rider and 4×4 models have 130kW and 450Nm for the auto models and 420Nm for the manual models.

Body styles

As for the structure of the line-up, buyers can – as expected – choose from a range of cab-chassis or pick-up models.

In the 4×2 model line there are single-cab-chassis, extra-cab pick-up, and dual-cab pick-up bodystyles, while the 4×4 range includes single-cab-chassis, extra-cab-chassis and extra-cab pick-up, and dual-cab-chassis and dual-cab pick-up bodies.

There is no single-cab pick-up bodystyle, and the extra-cab now has a rearward-opening door for easier back seat access.

Measurements and capacities

It is worth noting that the best towing capacity of any automatic model is 3200kg (for the 2.8 diesel), which is just better than that of the Triton and less than many of its rivals (such as the Colorado, D-Max, BT-50, Ranger) which claim 3500kg capacity. That capacity is available in HiLux manual models with the 2.8 diesel.
