2016 Toyota Corolla Hybrid hatch confirmed for Australia
The ultra-green ranks of Australia’s top-selling brand will be bolstered in the coming months, with confirmation today that the 2016 Toyota Corolla Hybrid hatch has been confirmed for a local launch.
The hybrid hatch has been available for sometime as part of the overseas Auris line (sold here as the Corolla hatch) and Toyota says that, in western Europe, the variant accounts for more than 50 per cent of all sales in the range.
Toyota Australia says its new Corolla hybrid is expected to use “around one-third less fuel” than its regular automatic transmission-equipped counterparts, which list fuel use at 6.1L/100km on the combined cycle. In raw numbers, that should mean a figure of around 4.1L/100km.
Official local figures are still to be confirmed, but, on the New European Driving Cycle (NEDC), the Auris Hybrid lists fuel use at a low 3.5L/100km. By comparison, European figures for the new 2016 Prius are expected to be listed at around 3.2L/100km.
As with its European counterpart, the Corolla Hybrid will draw power from a 73kW VVT-i 1.8-litre petrol engine mated to a 60kW electric motor for a combined system output of 100kW. A ‘Multidrive S’ CVT automatic transmission sends power to the front wheels.
In Europe, Toyota says the Auris hybrid offers a 0-100km/h time of 10.9 seconds.
Toyota Australia has yet to release full details on the Corolla Hybrid’s local specification, although it has confirmed satellite navigation, Toyota Link connected mobility, dual-zone automatic air-conditioning and bi-LED headlamps.
“The combination of Toyota’s hybrid technology and Australia’s best-selling car gives us a unique opportunity to broaden the market appeal of both,” Toyota Australia marketing director Tony Cramb said.
“Corolla hybrid hatch will offer all the advantages of Australia’s favourite car, coupled with the hybrid system’s established performance, reliability, durability and exceptionally low running costs.
This latest offering will be the fifth hybrid model in the local Toyota range, joining the Prius, Prius C, Prius V and Camry Hybrid – the latter being the company’s best-selling hybrid in 2015 with 5881 sales.
The regular Prius hatch managed 459 sales, while the Prius C hatch and Prius V people-mover achieved 1227 and 640 sales respectively.
