2016 Lexus GS 200t Front Three Quarter
Add the 2016 Lexus GS to the list of Lexus models receiving the new 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine. Along with a cosmetic refresh inside and out, the updated luxury sedan gains a new GS 200t model to join the existing GS 350, GS 450h, and GS F models. Though a 2.0-liter turbo-four may not sound like enough motor to power the large GS sedan, rivals like the BMW 528i and Audi A6 2.0T Quattro also offer four-cylinder engine options. The Lexus’ power output is in the hunt with these German sedans, with its turbo-four offering up 241 hp and 258 lb-ft of torque. The GS 200t will offer only rear-wheel drive and an eight-speed automatic transmission, with fuel economy estimated at 33 mpg highway—4 mpg better than the V-6-powered GS 350 and only 1 mpg less than the GS 450h hybrid.

The visual changes to the 2016 Lexus GS lineup essentially echo the look of the high-performance GS F revealed earlier this year. New LED headlight accent strips cut across the front fascia, and the spindle grille is slightly reshaped. Clear taillights in the rear go for a more modern look, and the rear fascia is reshaped. There are also new 18- and 19-inch wheel designs, and three new exterior color choices. Inside, the GS has slightly different trim, with new leather colors including Cheateau and Noble Brown. The 2016 Lexus GS 350 carries on mostly unchanged under the skin, though the 3.5-liter V-6 engine does gain 5 hp and 3 lb-ft of torque for new total of 311 hp and 280 lb-ft. It still mates with an eight-speed automatic in rear-wheel-drive versions, and a six-speed automatic when equipped with optional all-wheel drive. The GS 450h hybrid still provides 338 total system hp from its Atkinson-cycle 3.5-liter V-6 paired with an electric motor. The optional F Sport package, which adds more aggressive exterior trim and a few chassis upgrades, is still available for the GS 350 and GS 450h, and can now be applied to the GS 200t as well.

Also new for 2016 is the availability of the Lexus Safety System +, an option package that bundles together active safety features like pre-collision braking, lane-departure warning, and adaptive cruise control. This package will likely reduce the price of these options, and serves as a stand-alone option independent from other packages. The Remote Touch infotainment controller is also slightly revised, and the Lexus Enform connectivity system has a few more capabilities for 2016. The updated 2016 Lexus GS makes its official debut at the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance before going on sale later this year.
