I own a ’90 4cyl. Camry and have had distributor problems on rainy or high
humidity days since I bought it…..The car will run fine for a few months
after replacing the distributor but eventually will act up again…The
local Toyota dealer claims to have never heard of any other complaints such
as mine…..If anyone knows of a more permanent fix (especially if Toyota
has addressed this) or can post some sort of Toyota help line, I would
appreciate it…
Thanks

Are the distributor cap, rotor and plug wires genuine Toyota parts? I
have seen after market parts cause such problems. Also make sure there
is a rubber gasket in between the distributor and distributor cap.

I wholeheartedly agree. Don’t dick around with aftermarket ignition parts
on Toyotas. An example – As far as your distributor cap goes (going on my
Celica experiences here), the real thing is reddish-orange and has a
rubberized texture to it. The replacement ones are usually more brown in
colour and made of a cheesy bakelite material which cracks and crumbles
away around the screw mount holes. I found the genuine Toyota part was
actually cheaper by $2 when I bought it.
BTW, I find my car actually is much smoother and seems to have a lot more
pep in drizzly, humid conditions!
