<
HELLO, THIS IS ED CONRAD. OBVIOUSLY, I AM NOT HOME OR I WOULD’VE
ANSWERED THE PHONE. PLEASE LEAVE A BRIEF MESSAGE.
<
Greetings, Mr. Ed Conrad.
<
This is Autonomus Unit Zinkag 41, brood assemblage
Delta 64 — you can call me Zink for short — and I have
a brief comment about your recent posting to alt.alien.visitors in
which you expressed fear that earthers are going to the dogs.
<
You see, Ed, There WAS a possibility that humans COULD contribute to
civilizing the universe but they have proven to be violent and
shortsighted for that.
<
Instead they will be left alone until they kill themselves off.
<
I speak only for the crew of my ship and necessarily in an unofficial
capacity, and as such the statements below should not be taken as
authoritative or their opinions being representative of official
policy.
<
Historically, the policy towards Earthers within the galactic milieu
has been largely as you say (all fucked up). As you know, lengthy
programs of detailed observation were undertaken several hundred years
ago.
<
Nearly every academic extrapolated from the various terrestrial techno-
culture studies from that effort has concluded that Earthers, as a
self-organized species, would end poorly in some inevitable global
conflagration or religious conflict.
<
As we know, it has happened before and will happen again countless
times among species whose biology fails to support reasoned thinking
with sufficient quality and rigor. Earthers have been shown to have
insufficient capacity within their brains for rational policy.
<
In the unforgiving universe, they will pay the price sooner or later.
<
The caveat in all this comes from the possibility that these Earthers
might achieve inter-stellar spaceflight capabilities. In that event,
the chances of these Earthers destroying themselves completely is
appreciably diminished with each successful colony.
<
The local stellar group is unoccupied and is rich in raw materials,
and is therefore ripe for exploitation, if they get out there — by
which time it would be too late for peaceful solutions.
<
In the nineteen eighties it was clear that the U.S. space program was
moribund with politics; so far, so good. But thirty years later we are
threatened with civilian access to LEO (low earth orbit), which in
some scenarios explodes into Space Renaissance, leading to non-trivial
solar-system expansion.
<
Furthermore, Earthers have somehow muddled through many major crises
without a large incident and may in fact have developed geopolitical
talent sufficient to this minimal task.
<
Barring accident, in fifty years the Earthers could be pushing their
first generation ships out in the cometary halo or beyond.
<
Of course they could still have a big nuclear accident but I am
beginning to think this is not assured, and hence becomes a matter of
some concern. What will we do if the Earthers bring their cultures of
insanity and violence to our space?
<
In their current "form" they cannot even begin to communicate
meaningfully with our delegates, translators notwithstanding.
<
Perhaps they will develop artificial intelligences that exceed their
native capacities and which would therefore be capable, in principle,
of interface.
<
Even in that case the problem shifts position only slightly if they
retain their delusional belief systems.
<
I suppose the question of change must be revisited. Can these Earthers
make changes to their biology and improve the quality of their
reasoning?
<
We’ll ignore the issue of terrestrial politics for the moment and
simply consider whether their current level of technological progress
would allow it. I think the answer is a qualified "yes", but I am in
no way prepared to say whether they are capable of changing enough
within the time remaining.
<
Rather than wait for the actual specialists to weigh in, I would still
like to consider what this means.
<
Their major obstacles are political and sociological. The politics
driving their general socio-economic systems is unable to handle these
issues properly; the entrenched conservatism rejects nearly everything
non-epsilon with respect to their vector of now.
<
On the side of sociology, the majority of Earther individuals are
peasant-level, therefore capable of contributing little more than the
work from their physical labors. This inefficiency allows nearly
unconstrained growth in established fields of science and technology
which are useful to the political economy but only influences
fundamental change as a function of its unpredictiblity in
deployment.
<
I can’t even begin to guess where an impetus to improve their
biological thinking basis would arise — or could arise. The concept
is several big jumps from the orthodoxy in any of their religions.
<
In this light I suggest that the threat of Earther off-planet
expansion is imminent and that we should begin to discuss what we are
going to do about it if we cannot interfere directly.

ALIENS AIN'T TOO HAPPY WITH EARTHERS

How to adjust alternator belt on 1999 Lexus ES300?
Dear Experts,
I have a 1999 ES300, V6. Very similar to the Camry V6.
I’m visiting Canada now (with the car), and it’s really cold.
For those of you who don’t know, rubber is contrarian;
rubber actually expands in the cold.
So, my timing belt has stretched. When I press
my finger beside the alternator, the belt has a lot
of movement and give. It needs to be tightened.
(Tires need to filled with more air too, and readjusted
in the spring.)
On the two Fords that I used to own, there were two
different ways to adjust the belt.
One had the old style, with a belt dedicated to the
alternator. To tighten the belt, you loosed an alternator
bolt, levered the alternator to make the tension high,
and then tightened the bolt down. Similar to this:
http://forums.motivemag.com/zerothread?id=3490925
Another Ford had a big serpentine belt. To make
more tension, you first loosened the lock bolt,
turned a screw assembly to push a pulley into the
serpentine belt, creating tension, and then
tightened the lock bolt.
Questions:
1)
on the 1999 Lexus es300, the belt for the alternator is
actually a serpentine belt, correct? Meaning, that it
connects multiple components.
2)
How do I create more tension on the 1999 Lexus alternator belt?
– move the alternator, or
– move a pulley into tension, or
– something else? what’s the secret?
Thanks a lot!
{OT:} 80% of Americans (Left & Right) opposed to SCOTUS decision
"Specifically, 85% of Democrats, 81% of Independents, and 76% of
Republicans opposed it. "
http://news.yahoo.com/s/ynews/ynews_ts1137
Left and right united in opposition to controversial SCOTUS decision
Much has been made of late about the hyper-partisan political
environment in America. On Tuesday, Sen. Evan Bayh explained his
surprising recent decision to leave the Senate by lamenting a
"dysfunctional" political system riddled with "brain-dead
partisanship." It seems you’d be hard-pressed to get Republicans and
Democrats inside and outside of Washington to agree on anything these
days, that if one party publicly stated its intention to add a
"puppies are adorable" declaration to its platform, that the other
party would immediately launch a series of anti-puppy advertisements.
But it appears that one issue does unite Americans across the
political spectrum.
A new Washington Post-ABC News poll finds that the vast majority of
Americans are vehemently opposed to a recent Supreme Court ruling that
opens the door for corporations, labor unions, and other organizations
to spend money directly from their general funds to influence
campaigns.
As noted by the Post’s Dan Eggen, the poll’s findings show "remarkably
strong agreement" across the board, with roughly 80% of Americans
saying that they’re against the Court’s 5-4 decision. Even more
remarkable may be that opposition by Republicans, Democrats, and
Independents were all near the same 80% opposition range.
Specifically, 85% of Democrats, 81% of Independents, and 76% of
Republicans opposed it. In short, "everyone hates" the ruling.
The poll’s findings could enhance the possibility of getting a broad
range of support behind a movement in Congress to pass legislation
that would offset the Court’s decision. Of those polled, 72% said they
supported congressional action to reverse its effects. Sen. Charles
Schumer, who’s leading the reform effort in the Senate, told the Post
that he hoped to get "strong and quick bi-partisan support" behind a
bill that "passes constitutional muster but will still effectively
limit the influence of special interests."
The findings of the poll are a bit surprising considering the fact
that the case split the Supreme Court, with the five conservative
justices in favor and the four more liberal justices against it. The
decision was almost universally hailed by Republicans in Washington,
who saw it as a victory for the free speech provided for under the
Constitution, while President Obama and prominent Democrats in
Washington almost universally derided it as a dark day for American
democracy.
However, Sen. John McCain, one of the original sponsors of the
campaign finance law struck down by Court’s decision and one of its
few prominent Republican opponents, may have been prophetic when he
predicted Americans would turn against the Court. McCain told CBS’s
"Face the Nation" that there would be a "backlash" once awareness grew
about "the amounts of union and corporate money that’s going to go
into political campaigns."
Perhaps the new poll numbers show that McCain might have been onto
something.
Update: NHTSA investigating 500k Toyota Corollas' faulty steering
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration will formally announce a new investigation, Thursday, into the 2009 and 2010 Toyota Corolla after it received more than 80 complaints. According to a NHTSA official, the investigation will involve 363,000 2009 Corollas and 136,000 2010 models. Leftlane reported that NHTSA was in the initial screening phase concerning complaints for [...]

Toyota recalls all models with 8 track player
I tell ya, this recall stuff is getting bad.
math for mike hunter, sales manager extraordinaire
so mike, since you say you were in sales, and sales is all about
numbers, and because you say toyota sell their vehicles at a loss, i
want you to take a little time to walk us through your math.
1. what is your gross loss when you sell seven vehicles for $19,725
each, and you, the dealer, gets invoiced a net of $11,189 each for them
by the manufacturer? [no, "dealer invoice" doesn't count because that's
not the actual number you pay.]
2. and what is that loss after your total overheads [taxes, real estate,
utilities, admin, insurance, advertising (net, not gross), and
preparation labor of $1,052 per vehicle is accounted for?
3. and finally, what is the total loss to the owner of the franchise
after you’ve paid your sales schlep their $593 commission per vehicle?
