I’ve got 2 Toyotas that need new contacts in the magnetic switch for the
starters. The local dealer says they are not available, and new starters
are required. A reputable local auto electric rebuilder says they have
them, but that there are many variations, and he would have to see my old
ones. They are not open on Saturday, which is about the only time I am
able to do the work.
The cars are:
’91 Camry 4 cylinder automatic, starter no. 28100-03020
’92 Corolla 4 cylinder automatic, starter no. 28100-01030
They are both Nippon-Denso starters made in Tennesee.
If anyone knows of a source for these parts, it would be greatly
appreciated.

I have a Toyota Camry 1989 V6 of which the (automatic) transmission has
broken down. It can only run on the first gear currently. Does it mean
a total rebuilt is needed?
I live in the Washington D.C. area. Any recommendation for a qualified
mechanic in this area who charges reasonably? Some people told me AAMCO,
but I’m not sure if I should trust a chain-store for a big job like that.
You know Jiffy Lube, right? ;-(
Also, before the break-down, the coolant used to splash out of the hose
connected to the reservoir if I drive over 60 miles an hour. If I drive
slower than that, coolant seems to be OK. I just replaced a thermostat.
Could it be the head gasket?
Thanks in advance,

Let me reecount a rather sobering episode which happened to me recently: I
had the absolutely miserable misfortune to have the fender of my 88 Celica
scrunched by some jampot who ran a red light. Damage-scrunched fender, popped
hood. Nothing else. Since our local dealer unfortunately doesn’t do body
work, I took the car to the insurance-company-recommended "Oh, they’re
great!" body shop. Only problem is that the body shop was the collision
center for a CHEVY dealer. I was constantly reassured by the insurance
company that this body shop was the finest in the land. Grudgingly, I
accepted. They probably got a huge kickback from this body shop and they were
the cheapest they could find.
Elapsed time – 2 months. My car is still there. It’s been in and out 3 times.
So far my rental and loaner car inventory is:
Ford Contour – excerably gutless engine. Noisy, and slooooowwww. I understand
they want $24,000 for these cars in Canada. yeah right
Chevy Blazer – comfy, but horrible controls and wallows all over the place
Chevy cavalier automatic – need I say more. Eggh!!!
They left the front grille unfastened at one end. Probably couldn’t get it to
fit. The left turn signal assembly became loose all of a sudden. The hood was
cocked to one side and was binding on the right headlamp. They somehow
removed the hood prop rod and left it behind the drivers seat. They lost the
pivot clamp for the rod and had to order a new one from Toyota. They still
fucked up the hood alignment. The ignition coil was unscrewed from it’s
mounting bracket and left dangling! No wonder the car was mis-firing. Weather
stripping was left dangling at the top of the firewall and on the left
headlamp.
The guy who did the original adominable piece of work is on holidays now.
Needless to say, my insurance company is thinking of blacklisting these
jerks.
Moral of the story – if you want the work done properly, take it to a
specialist Toyota body shop or a high-quality independant shop that you know
does the job properly.
Any one else have similar body shop horror stories?

My 86 GTS won’t start on certian occasions. It happens when I drive
over 15 miles and leave my car for a short time and come back. I
brought it to toyota (big mistake) they replaced the battery and
starter which did noting to cure the problem. I then brought to a
good mechanic I know that works on Hondas. He put a bigger ground on
the car and the problem became less frequent. I really would like to
keep this car but the problem is beggining to frustrate me. All told
I’ve brought the car to 4 different mechanics and they can’t solve it.
Is there some other way to find a Great Toyota mechanic w/o going to
Toyota?
